oh yeah on a side note, there was this article or rather, a photo caption that i saw in TNP yesterday. the photo depicted a metal security gate at HDB lift landings to keep out non-residents. it was implied that only residents with their key-card could unlock the gate.
so the caption went somewhere along the lines of "residents unhappy with new security system because they find it inconvenient, especially if they forget their cards". when i read this, i was flabbergasted. what kind of a world do we live in where it is socially acceptable to blame others for your own shortcomings?! the security gate there weeds out undesirable characters from loitering around blocks for whatever sinister purposes and the best thing you can say is "oh this sucks, what if i forget my card"? come on people! it's nobody's fault if you dont have the basic discipline to bring along proper "security measures" as it were. what next? do we rant at the airport for refusing us entry if we forget our passport or boarding pass? hey you know while we're at it, let's blame the traffic police for hauling us back to the station if we drive without our driving license!
seriously such over-dependency really hits a nerve with me. how do we expect society to become more enlightened and progress when we have people who cannot see the bigger picture and blame others for their own incompetence?
i put it to everyone that there is no relevant difference between the above examples i've mentioned and this security gate issue. if the government is even considering the residents' complaints to be a legitimate issue, then i am sorely disappointed. if this were the case, why should the mollycoddling stop here? in fact, if people find security measure a hindrance, then remove ALL form of it why don't you?!
come on! take some ownership over your own lives. seriously.
